[NCLUG] No desktop manager

Oh God, this is embarrassing.

You know how I've been complaining that I couldn't get my terminal emulator to
work? Well, it's because I have no desktop manager. I just finished my
internship and took my computer in on the last day for some help and some
downloads. (Fast connection there.) I asked our resident Linux guru to look at
my machine and see if he could figure out what was wrong. On opening Gnome he
exclaimed "You have no desktop manager!" I had known that my desktop at home
looked, well, *different* from my desktop at work, but had chalked it up to
the fact that my home distro is Debian and at work we use RedHat. As I had
(another embarrassing confession) *forgotten to bring my serial mouse* (old
computer, what can I say?) and there were none at work, we were trying to
correct this using only a keyboard. This was not successful. He told me to go
home, log in as root, and type:

xhost +

and then to type:

sawfish&

and to scroll down and do the Sawfish config. Well, I did that - or at least
tried to. Logged in as root, I typed:

xhost +

and got:

unable to open display ""

I looked at that a minute and plowed ahead with:

sawfish&

and got:

can't open display ""

So - does anybody have any ideas as to how I can correct this?

Thanks,

Judy
