It's basically someone at Sun's weird idea of getting around inetd (and it's ilk) by re-implementing it using registered numbers that aren't ports. :-P I think it may pre-date inetd. It was designed at a time when UNIX ethernet was still pretty new stuff, and much of UNIX networking was still ARPANET, and local university hacks. John
