[NCLUG] XFree86 4.1.0 slow compared to 3.3.6?

it starts out slow.  even if there's only one window open, text
scrolls in rxvt are slow, graphics scroll in mozilla is slow, and
window movement (the actual painting-in of a window at the new
location -- i'm not using opaque moves or anything) is also very slow.

system load doesn't seem to really affect it; it doesn't seem any
worse now, with two users' worth of mozilla and terms open...
