There is someone - can't remember who - but they advertise in a lot of the 
trade rags, that makes a 3U rack mount that has the complete motherboard 
and disk, on a front accessible, vertical card. If I remember, it takes 
about 12 motherboards in a 3U chassis (24 processors).

If you are interested, I'll go back through some dead tree pubs and see if 
I can find the vendor.
