Debian questions...
What release?
Is everything installed and up to date?
Are you using any non-standard apt sources?(ximian?)

General questions...
Do you have a ~/.xsession or is it using the system default(/etc/X11/Xsession)?
What does it contain?
Check and see if it left a ~/.xsession-errors
If that doesn't help you can try commenting things out until you find what's 
causing the problem.

Some things (gnome) need to be able to do a reverse lookup on your hostname 
too so make sure that's in there too.

If you still have problems post more details.
