Dang, for once I knew something I could contribute, but Bob beat me to
it.  :-)

Yeah, col -b is the historically correct method.

Also note that "good" versions of more(1) or less(2) should be smart
enough to handle the backspace chars (on terminals/windows that do
handle them) so you can search for highlighted/underlined strings in
nroff output without having to col -b first.  Try it and see if yours
works.

For viewing a manual entry with vi, I still go through col -b on the way
to a file.
