Not all KVMs are created equal.  We have some $100 4-port ones that we use
around the office, and they are ok, but sometimes they just act weird.  At
the server facility, we have these really nice "Enterprise" 16-port jobbies
and KVM-over-IP which I've showed off to many of you here.  They work
extremely well, no problems doing installs or anything on them, though
mostly we use text console, it has no problems with graphics.

Try connecting the cables directly and see if that helps.
