I have been running PPPoE on my linux firewall for about two years. I have
Earthlink with a static IP address. It works great. I could not get my
connection up using the PPPoE on the modem. One of their cs people kinda
new linux and helped me turn it off (set the modem to work in bridge mode)
and pointed me in the right direction to setup the PPPoE on my box.

It's been a couple of years ago, and they (Earthlink) do not support
linux. Lost my connection for four or five days recently and had a bad
time getting it resolved through CS because of my linux. They were no
better after I moved the connection to a windows box so they could
determine the problem. After many hours with cs, they decided they would
send a tech with new modem in hand to test out my circuit. Then out of the
blue, my service returned (before the tech came out) I kinda think someone
turned something off in the bellsouth building their equipment is in
during maintenance or something to that effect.
