Ubuntu has switched to the 'upstart' init program instead of the

The 'upstart' package doesn't use a /etc/inittab by default and
therefore does not include one.  But it is compatible with it and if
one exists should read it and respond to it.

But perhaps you missed the part that said that changing the run level
won't disable the X display manager at boot time?  It doesn't work
that way in that system.

Huh?  What?  Huh?  This is the first that you have said about sourcing
your $HOME/.login file.  You said you wanted to disable the X display
manager graphical login handler.  I don't understand how this is
related.

What is it that you are really wanting to do?
