Not to put words in Russ's mouth, but for the purposes it's being used,
DES is entirely adequate (and given the processing resources in the
canopy devices, may even be the "best" option).  Any given security
chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and DES is *far* from the
weakest link in the canopy (or any WISP, for that matter) chain.
