And you're going to find it continually lacking even at this point in
time... I'm running 3.7.1 dev builds and they STILL haven't fixed basic
sh*t like setting Fonts in the main settings panel. See this for Linus

Have you tried Cinnamon? It's Gnome 3 gussied-up to (mostly) work like
Gnome 2. From the good folks at Linux Mint (their repos will work fine
with Ubuntu, I've tried it):

And as someone mentioned, there's also MATE, which is an attempt to keep
Gnome 2 going:
