[NCLUG] FOSS (OpenWRT) friendly extended-range WiFi home ideas?

I haven't looked for a few years, but it used to be the case that extenders
would halve your wifi throughput.
Has this issue been resolved by the "mesh"?
I'm only familiar with meshes in IOT networks, what I know of them doesn't
seem promising for day to day PC usage.
