gmail help

Hi,
I finally found out how to back up my gmail messages on Thunderbird.
However, I need to do a bulk delete of my gmail messages. Unfortunately,
selecting all my messages and hitting delete fails to send the messages to
the trash folder.
Any suggestions? Or do I just need to give up on Gmail and run my own mail
server?
I don't want to spend days manually deleting email messages and would
rather let my account die than waste my time like  this or give Google any
money for storage.
