Chris,
I am going to be doing the same thing. I have found Cummings and Associates
on 32nd and blake in Denver to be very good for this type of thing. I picked
up two high res 20" monitors for $99 a piece there. These are pretty high
quality monitors that are used.
As for the hardware mame does not have such high system requirments. My old
celeron 450 has yet to be pushed by any of the xmame roms that I have played
with. An Athlon or Duron is going to be 100 times overkill for what your
looking at. My little laptop plays every rom that I have played so far
without so much as a stutter. C & A also have some used Dell gx1 and gxa for
about $300 or so. These are all PII based machines that should run xmamae
with no problems. I am using an abit bh6 motherboard and a celeron 533 for
my system.
CmdrTaco of slashdot fame has a nice little script for cataloging and
starting roms in xmame with a joystick and buttons. This should help free
you from having a full keyboard/mouse hiden in the cabinet. You can take a
look at his project at http://cmdrtaco.net/jubei/
