There might be some hope with Ogg Tarkin.  This is the video project which 
corresponds to the audio project Ogg Vorbis.  The goals of this project is 
to have a patent and licensing free audio/video.  Combine this with IceCast 
streaming and you have audio/video truly suited for Linux.
