[NCLUG] ext3 versus ReiserFS?

I went through this, this past summer deciding on what JF file system I was
going to use on our student file server. Back then ext3 was still in
experimental phases, so I didn't even consider it. Reiserfs looked good but
had a bug in exporting with NFS, they did have work around for it but it
didn't distill any confidence in me. So I finally chose XFS from
SGI. They had their own modified RH install disc, so installation was a
snap. I had some problems getting disk quota to work, but found a patch
for that. The current release of XFS is very stable. I have nothing but
high praise for XFS, just have to hope that SGI will stay in business to
keep supporting it.
I've been very pleased with the XFS performance, its FAST. I have a 500Gb
file system, with an average of 200 to 300 active users connected via
samba. Before on ext2, the server would have a average load 4 to 5 (dual
PentIII 400Mgz, 4Gb of RAM) with peaks up into the 30's!! Now, the load
average is mostly under 1, with peaks in 13's to 15 range.
Of course the biggest improvement is no more 3+ hour down time waiting for
a 500Gb file system to fsck!! Now it takes about 10 seconds.
