It is also possible that the 2.2 kernel was a bootstrapping kernel
with every module compiled into the kernel.  Whereas the newer kernel
is almost certainly a modular kernel.  In which case any needed
modules will need to be listed in /etc/modules.

What does 'lspci' say?
