Yeah dd is excellent if you have the proper setup to put both drives in
the same system. You can buy an adapter that'll allow you to connect the
laptop ide to the regular PC sized cables. Alternatively I would
recommend rdiff-backup if you would simply like to backup your home
directory and perhaps /etc and /root. There's a nice tutorial on using
rdiff-backup here:
